Hello @HenryHTH2020 This error usually happens when GitHub’s automated checks temporarily restrict Copilot (Like: if your account needs extra validation or if the system can't verify your eligibility right now.). Since it's a server-side block, only GitHub Support can lift it. To speed things up, update your existing ticket (#190362) at support.github.com with these details:
Once their support team verifies your account details, they will manually enable your access. |

Hi,
Thank you for your reply.

It seems contradictory.
Best regards,

Access to GitHub Copilot depends on your account type and eligibility. Here are a few things you can check:
* Make sure you have an active subscription or trial enabled in your GitHub settings
* If you're a student, verify your eligibility through GitHub Student Developer Pack
* Check if your organization (if you're using a work account) has enabled Copilot access
* Try logging out and back in, or reauthorizing Copilot in your IDE
If none of these work, you can also check the Copilot access page here: https://github.com/settings/copilot
Hope this helps.

Hi Huang, You are absolutely right to feel confused—the previous suggestions are contradictory to the specific error you are seeing. Because your error explicitly states "Your account is unable to sign up for Copilot. Please contact Support," standard troubleshooting steps like logging out, checking your IDE, or verifying student status will not work for you. Here is exactly what is happening and how to handle it: Why You Are Seeing This Specific Error Payment Method Flags: Your card might have been flagged by the automated system (this is common with virtual credit cards, prepaid cards, or if there is a mismatch between your location and the card's issuing country). Automated Security Filters: The system might have incorrectly caught your account in an automated spam or abuse filter. Regional Restrictions: GitHub is required by US law to restrict Copilot access in certain sanctioned regions. What You Need To Do Next
I know waiting is incredibly frustrating when you need the tool right away, but hopefully, this clarifies why you are stuck in this loop and saves you from wasting time trying to adjust settings that are currently locked out for you. Support will get to your ticket! |

Hi Huang,
You are absolutely right to feel confused—the previous suggestions are contradictory to the specific error you are seeing.
Because your error explicitly states "Your account is unable to sign up for Copilot. Please contact Support," standard troubleshooting steps like logging out, checking your IDE, or verifying student status will not work for you.
Here is exactly what is happening and how to handle it:
Why You Are Seeing This Specific Error
This message means GitHub's automated security or billing system has placed a hard block on your account, preventing you from registering for Copilot. The system is forcing a manual review. This typically happens for a few common reasons:
Payment Method Flags: Your card might have been flagged by the automated system (this is common with virtual credit cards, prepaid cards, or if there is a mismatch between your location and the card's issuing country).
Automated Security Filters: The system might have incorrectly caught your account in an automated spam or abuse filter.
Regional Restrictions: GitHub is required by US law to restrict Copilot access in certain sanctioned regions.
What You Need To Do Next
Because this is an account-level restriction, you cannot fix this yourself from your settings.
1. Wait for your existing ticket: A person from GitHub's Trust & Safety or Billing team must manually review your account to lift the restriction.
2. Do not open duplicate tickets: Submitting multiple tickets for the same issue will group them together and can actually push you further down the support queue.
3. Track your status: You can monitor the status of your current ticket directly at the GitHub Support Portal<https://support.github.com/tickets>.
I know waiting is incredibly frustrating when you need the tool right away, but hopefully, this clarifies why you are stuck in this loop and saves you from wasting time trying to adjust settings that are currently locked out for you. Support will get to your ticket!
